Los Angeles Dodgers 3, Chicago Cubs 1

The Cubs were put out of their misery last night by the Dodgers as they just couldn’t hit the ball. Can’t blame Derek Lee for this loss as he was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a run scored. Pinch hitter Daryle Ward drove Lee in with a pinch hit single late in the game. Rich Harden was awful for the Cubs in this game working the first 4.1 innings and allowing 5 hits, 3 earned runs, walking 3 batters and whiffing 4. He was the losing pitcher for the Cubs. Sean Marshall, Carlos Marmol and Neal Cotts followed Harden in the game and they pitched well enough to keep the Cubs in the game working 3.2 innings and allowing only 1 hit while whiffing 5 batters and not giving up any runs. The Cubs were swept 3-0 by the Dodgers as Cubs’ fans misery continues.

The Cubs looked like the Bad News Bears last night as each of the Cubs’ infielders made a error. Mark DeRosa was 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and 2 RBIs. Derek Lee was the only other Cub with more than 1 hit as he was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Carlos Zambrano couldn’t overcome all of the shodding infield play. He worked the first 6.1 innings allowing 6 hits, 7 runs (3 earned), walked 2 batters and whiffed 7 as he was the losing pitcher. Reliever Carlos Marmol didn’t help the situation working the 8th inning allowing 3 hits, 2 earned runs and whiffing 2 batters. The Cubs are now down 2-0 in this series.

Things were looking good for the Cubs as they were winning 2-0 after 4 innings and Wrigley Field was electric. But, 1B James Loney threw a wet towel over the optimism of the Cubs’ crowd when he cranked a grand slam off of Ryan Dempster and it was all down hill from there. Dempster worked the first 4.2 innings for the Cubs last night and he allowed 4 hits, 4 earned runs, walked 7 batters and whiffed 2 as he was the losing pitcher. Sean Marshall, Jeff Samardzija and Jason Marquis worked the last 4.1 innings for the Cubs allowing 3 earned runs and they all gave up a earned run apiece. Mark DeRosa was one of the few Cubs that showed up in this game as he was 2 for 4 with 1 run scored, a homer and 2 RBIs. Ryan Theriot also had a solid game as he was 2 for 4. Alfonso Soriano heard the boo birds in Wrigley as he was 0 for 5, whiffing twice. The Cubs are now down 1-0 to the Dodgers in this series.

At least the Diamondbacks didn’t make Cubs fans suffer as they got rid of them fast, sweeping them in three games.  The Diamondbacks jumped the Cubs quick in this baseball game and knocked out Cubs starter Rich Hill after only 3 innings.  Hill gave up 6 hits, 3 earned runs, walked 2 batters and whiffed 3.  Bobby Howry was the standout out of the bullpen for the Cubs as he worked 2 innings allowing only 1 hit while whiffing 4 batters.  Kerry Wood didn’t look too good as he allowed 2 hits and an earned run in only 1 inning.

The Cubs didn’t hit the ball too well against the Diamondbacks as Derek Lee (2 for 4), Mark DeRosa (2 for 4, 1 run) and Jason Kendall (1 for 4, 1 RBI) were the only hitters that did any damage in the last game of the season for the Cubs.  The D-Backs win this series 3-0 and send the Cubs back to the drawing board.

The Cubs have now dug themselves into a hole after tonight’s game.  Things got off to a good start for the Cubs as rookie catcher Geovany Soto whacked a 2-run homer off of Doug Davis.  The lead was short lived after Ted Lilly gave up a three-run bomb to Chris Young and the D-Backs never looked back.  They unloaded on Ted Lilly who only lasted 3.1 innings and he allowed 7 hits, 6 earned runs, walked 4 batters and whiffed 4 as he was the losing pitcher.  Rookie Kevin Hart was the next pitcher in and he worked 1 inning and he allowed 2 earned runs, walked 2 batters and whiffed 2.  Scott Eyre only pitched to 1 batter and he gave up a hit that allowed Hart’s runs.  The Cubs are now down 2-0 to the Diamondbacks.
